Make this Cough Go Away!

The word is, that there's a cough going around, a hacking, annoying, congested type of cough(associated with a cold). I am experiencing it first hand. Symptoms: cough, pain in lung area, and congestion. I have had it for 2 days, and I want it gone! My remedies: hot tea, chicken soup, and vitamin D. My 2 year old has this cough as well, this is his 6th day- I spoke with his doctors office yesterday, and here's what they had to say "No cough medicine, use a vaporizer in his room, and saline nose drops. Unless he has a fever or is not sleeping, there is no need to bring him in." Well thank goodness he doesn't have a fever, the cost of a "sick visit": $65.

OK, so that is the advice for a toddler, here's what an adult can do, it really is quite similar:
  • It is safe to take cough medicines, just check the labels, and talk to the pharmacist
  • Use a vaporizer, or cool mist humidifier
  • Use saline nose drops
  • Rest
  • If you have a fever for more than 48 hours, see a doctor (if you don't have insurance, call around to get the lowest sick visit fee)
Remember: The average cold lasts 1-2 weeks! So be patient. Wash hands, and avoid spreading germs to others.

Exercising When Sick

If working out is a part of your daily routine, then getting sick is a real downer. Your aches and pains can hold you back, making you want to stay in bed. And for some cases, that is the best thing for you to do, along with some chicken soup and hot tea. However, if you're up to a little movement, while suffering a cough or cold, than try it, and pace yourself.

First, what are you sick with?

Divide your symptoms. If you don't feel too bad and all you've got is a stuffy head, runny nose or a scratchy throat -- a little workout might be OK.

But if your symptoms are mainly fever and muscle aches, a cough or an upset stomach -- you need to stay on the sidelines.

Go Slow.

Stretch and warm up before you begin. Drink plenty of water, and stop if you feel faint or out of breath. I would avoid the gym because you may spread your germs to others, or your sickness may get worse.

The safest exercises to start with:
  • Yoga
  • Walking

Review Celsius Drink

I'm always looking for ways to improve my energy, or lose weight. While shopping in Costco (Price club) I came across a package of a "calorie burning" drink, named Celsius. It really doesn't taste bad, and it definitely gives me energy. It claims to burn up to 100 calories and give you energy slowly over 3 hours. If you are sensitive to caffeine, I would start by only having half a can. When I've taken it without doing exercise, it gives me the jitters, and occasionally a headache. If I take it before exercise I have plenty of energy. I feel like I am sweating more, and giving off more heat. They say to drink up to 3 cans a day, I would never drink more than one can. I feel that one can is enough for me. The only flavor I have tried is Green Tea Raspberry Acai.
