Exercising When Sick

If working out is a part of your daily routine, then getting sick is a real downer. Your aches and pains can hold you back, making you want to stay in bed. And for some cases, that is the best thing for you to do, along with some chicken soup and hot tea. However, if you're up to a little movement, while suffering a cough or cold, than try it, and pace yourself.

First, what are you sick with?

Divide your symptoms. If you don't feel too bad and all you've got is a stuffy head, runny nose or a scratchy throat -- a little workout might be OK.

But if your symptoms are mainly fever and muscle aches, a cough or an upset stomach -- you need to stay on the sidelines.

Go Slow.

Stretch and warm up before you begin. Drink plenty of water, and stop if you feel faint or out of breath. I would avoid the gym because you may spread your germs to others, or your sickness may get worse.

The safest exercises to start with:
  • Yoga
  • Walking
